The Opportunity

The school in Liberia is named for Richard C. Hunter a member of Emmaus Church from 1973 until his death in February 2004. Richard Hunter provided personal support for the school for a number of years. He introduced members of Emmaus and others to the opportunities that the school provides to serve the children of Liberia.

Emmaus has provided $6000 in 2004 to the elementary, secondary and new vocational school in 2004. These funds came from the Emmaus Service and Mission budget, individual contributions to the Hunter School fund and from the Emmaus Neighbors in Need (NIN) fund raiser in October, 2004.

Contributions: Emmaus Church has created a separate fund to which church members and others can contribute. Checks can be made out to Emmaus UCC with a note for the "Hunter School Fund."

The Hunter School has been approved to receive funds from a special fund created by the United Nations  to operate a vocational school to train ex-combatants from the recent civil war in Liberia.  See copy of Hunter School Certificate from the government of Liberia.

Isaac Zaza, the founder of the Hunter School, appealed to Emmaus in November for funds to be used to construct a tent that would be a temporary home of the Hunter Vocational School. Funds were sent the day before Thanksgiving in response to the request.

Rev Zaza has informed Emmaus that 500 students have signed up for the Hunter Vocational School. See copy of flyer describing courses to be offered at the Hunter School
